After finishing my big 20cm*20cm softbox speed grid I had some leftovers from the black corrugated plastic sheeting (that the material that used my to do the grid itself-if you know how it is really called please tell me!),I decided to go on and build a small speed grid of the hot shoe flash that I use (Canon 580EXII 550EX and 430EX).This project is a very easy one and will expand your flash ability and creativity.

So lets start this fun project with our “shopping list”:

What we need:

1 black maple sheet-I use it also for some products shots.

1black corrugated plastic sheet,or left overs from the 20cm*20cm softbox speed grid project.

good contact glue

some rubber bands

a pair of scissors

a marker

An utility knife

big&strong ruler

1.Measuring and cutting the maple sheet for your speed grid:

Measure your flash size height and width – with the Canon 550EX who is the “biggest” flash that I have it is – 4.5cm height,8cm width.

Mark those sizes on the maple sheet and leave 2.5cm margin on one side of the paper, those margins will help you close the speed grid together.

If you are building it for your Canon speedlite 550EX You should cut a 27.5cm by 10 cm piece.

You should mark and cut it like this(make your width adjustments if you are going to build it for other type of hot shoe flash):

Make some soft and not deep cuts on the lines (4.5cm,10cm,4.5cm and 10cm) with your utility knife-this will help you to bend nicely the mapel sheet.

2.Now lets cut some stiripes of the corrugated plastic sheet. You should cut it 8 cm wide and about 1cm-2cm long. You should have about 20 of those stripes in order to pile them 4.5cmcm hieght.

3.Glue them together. As I did in the previous project I advise you to glue groups of 4-6 stripes together and them glue the groups together. You should have a 4.5cm height of stripes like in the following picture:

4.Put generous amount of the glue both on the grid panel and the mapel paper.Let it dry of some minutes before attaching it together.

5.Attach them together.Use the rubberbands to let it stick together. If you followed the instructions you should have something like that:

6.Now you have you own hot shoe flash speed gird. All it takes is about 20minutes and a couple of bucks for materials!

Here is the first pictures from the speed grid:

You want to get started?!!

Here’s what you need :

carton board (I used the leftovers from the DIY SoftBox project)

a good pair of scisors

one marker pen to mark the misures

Big Ruler (40cm or more)

Strong scotch tape

An utility knife

Black corrugated plastic sheeting (thats how think it is called-please inform me otherwise)

So lets do it!

1.What we’ll need to do first is to cut 4 pieces from the carton board.

Two pieces will be the top and bottom sides of the grided softbox-size 20cm*20cm.

Two pieces will 1cm shorter and will make the left&right sides of the the grided softbox

Here is the diagrams for the two types of panels you’ll need to the:

2.Now mark those sings on the squares you made (sorry that my look like a mess, but you’ll find your way to make the best marking for yourself):

3.Cut the 4 panels that you’ll use for the grided softbox:

4.The next step will be to cut a lot of strips from the corrugated plastic sheeting.I cut 2 pieces 20cm wide and 100cm long and cut the 20cm wide and 3cm long strips with the ruller I have:

When finished uoy’ll have a lot of those stripes, don’t worry the leftover will use as from the soon to come DIY small flash grid.

5.Lets start glue all the strips together.I glued groups of 10-15 strips until you will have a pile 20cm hight.Let the glue dry for some minutes.

6.Go on and use the masking tape to attach 3 side of the panels together-I glued together the bottom/top panel with the two side panel.Put good quantity of glue on the panels edge and on the pile of strips and glue it all together:

Once again, allow a couple of minutes for the glue to dry.

7.Wrap it all together and you’ll get the best ever DIY softbox + grid you could imagin!

And we are done!!!

Here is a quick setup to test the DIY softbox + grid:

Do it now and let us know how you used it!

Here’s what you need :

2 carton boards 100cm*70cm

a good pair of scissors

one marker pen to mark the measures

Ruler (40cm or more)

A measuring tape

Tin foil (to act as the reflector in the softbox)

Strong scotch tape

An utility knife

Dig’n and start the project

Lets start:

The first thing we’ll have to do is getting 4 squares 40cm*40cm size.

So that’s how I did it:

1. Put a mark on the bottom wide side of the carton board every 40cm.Repeat that on the top wide side too.

2.Do the same for the short side of the carton board (this will help you get the right 40cm*40cm squares).

3.after you have those marks, draw the line that make the 40cm*40cm squares.

4. Use your utility knife to cut 4 identical 40cm*40cm squares. This what you’ll get then:

5. On each square make a mark every 10cm as in the picture bellow (right and left sides):

6. At the bottom of the square make 2 marks 15cm from the left side and 15cm from the right side (that 10cm space will be where your flash gun will get into the soft box):

7. I missed one picture here,so I’ll make a draw of how each side of the soft box has to be cut.

8.Cut those squares and you’ll get this result:

9.Now lets start putting them together.I taped two squares together and then taped them together to form the soft box frame:

OK That the end of part I on DIY Soft Box 40cm*40cm for Less Than 10 bucks,

Part II

If you’ve got up to here are a step away from this:

After building the simple to do DIY softbox box,it is time to make the “speed ring” for the soft box and put the diffuser on.

What you need here is simple:

40cm*40cm DIY soft box (you did it in part I)

A 10 cm diameter pipe :can be a plastic pipe, plastic jar of anything stiff enough to hold the soft box and about 20-25cm long.

A good Sellotape (masking tape).

and lets go

1. Get the “speed ring” ready to use:as a speed ring I used a small baby food can (I have a lot of them cause I a have a baby boy!!!).Open the bottom side of the can with a can opener.Drill a small hole it the middle of the can (thats where the tripod will attach to the can,so don’t make the hole too big).

2.Use the masking tape to attach your new speed ring to the soft box.Tape it good so it won’t come apart.

3.For the soft box diffuser you can use almost every material,I used here drawing paper.Get a rectangle 50cm*50cm and cut at corners 5cm*5cm squares.Put it on the floor/table and at the center of it place the soft box.Glue each side of the soft box to the drawing paper.

Great by now you already own your first DIY soft box!!!

If you followed the instructions you should have this softbox ready to use:

Stay tuned for my first use of my first cheap DIY softbox:

Just some moments after I finished building it’I took some flowers shot,This is the setup:

Hey,in part I of this popular tutorial we’ll deal with the construction of the box itself.

So lets start working.

Here’s what you need :

2 carton boards 100cm*70cm

a good pair of scisors

one marker pen to mark the misures

Ruler (40cm or more)

A measuring tape

Tin foil (to act as the reflector in the softbox)

Strong scotch tape

An utility knife

In the next part close the DIY Soft Box 40cm*40cm for Less Than 10 bucks, and put a bracket on it.
